What this actually checks
Two separate Chess.com systems, because they can fail independently:
- The website (chess.com) — the pages you log in and play on. A green “Reachable” means the server answered your browser.
- The public API (api.chess.com) — the data service behind profiles, games and ratings. When this is slow or erroring, the site can look up but games and history stop loading. The number next to it is the real round-trip time from you to Chess.com.
When the website answers but the API doesn’t, you’ll see a partial outage — the kind where you can open the site but can’t start a game or load your archive.
Is it Chess.com, or is it you?
Because the test runs from your browser, it doubles as a check on your own connection:
- Checker says down, other sites work — it’s Chess.com, or the network path between you and it. Nothing to fix on your end; wait it out.
- Checker says up, but it won’t load for you — the problem is local. Try a different network, clear your cache, open a private window, or disable extensions (an ad-blocker or a work/school firewall is the usual culprit).
- Everything is failing — your internet is down, not Chess.com.
A quick cross-check: if the status above is red but friends are playing fine, the outage is probably on your network, not Chess.com’s. Third-party trackers like Downdetector and the @chesscom account on X show whether other people are reporting the same thing.
Why Chess.com goes down
Most outages fall into a few buckets: scheduled maintenance (often overnight US time), a spike in traffic during a major tournament or a popular streamer’s marathon, a content-delivery or Cloudflare hiccup that briefly cuts off a whole region, or a bug in a fresh release. Almost all of them are short. There’s nothing you can do to speed a real outage along, so the useful move is to confirm it’s them and come back in a few minutes.
