Do you actually tilt at chess?

Everyone believes they tilt. Measured against a few hundred games, most players don't. What does your game history actually suggest? Check your tilt stats with Rookbook.

What tilt would look like in the data

Tilt has a testable definition: your results get worse because of what just happened, not because of who you're playing. If it's real, your win rate after two losses should be meaningfully below your win rate after a win, using the same opponents and the same time control.

So you split your games by what preceded them — after a win, after one loss, after two, after three or more — and compare. That's it. The trap is in what counts as "meaningfully below."

Why most tilt evidence is noise

Say you win 51% of your games overall, and after two losses you win 54%. Sounds like the opposite of tilt. But if that bucket only holds fifty games, 54% is nothing — a player with no tilt lands there roughly a third of the time on luck alone.

The reason is that percentages from small samples wobble hard. A useful rule of thumb: to halve the wobble you need four times the games. With a 51% baseline:

Which means a 5-point drop after two losses is a real finding on 230 games and meaningless on 45. Most people never have enough games in the "after three losses" bucket for it to say anything, because losing three in a row is rarer than it feels.

This is also why streaks feel so convincing. Human memory keeps the four-loss evening and discards the twelve ordinary ones, so the pattern seems obvious long before the data supports it.

When people investigate a tilt feeling and find nothing, the cause is often something more boring and easier to fix:

Common questions

Is tilt real in chess? As a phenomenon, yes — playing angry or rushed demonstrably costs rating. What's unreliable is the individual's ability to detect it in themselves without measuring, because memory heavily weights the bad sessions.

How many games do I need to tell? Enough that each bucket holds a couple of hundred games, which usually means several hundred total. Below that, only very large effects are detectable.

Should I stop playing after two losses? Only if your own numbers show it costs you. The advice is repeated everywhere as though it's universal; for plenty of players the data doesn't support it, and quitting early just means fewer games.
